LISTSERV and Discussion Board
What Are They?
The difference between a listserv and this discussion board is that members of the listserv receive posts to the list via email. Discussion board posts remain on the web site only.
Over the past decade, email discussion groups have proven to be one of the most popular uses of the internet. The technology is very simple. A file of names and addresses (called, for obvious reasons, a list) is stored by name (e.g., CRAM-commissioners) on a computer (called a server) in a file-type recognizable by a particular piece of software (in this case LISTSERV)*. A message addressed to the list name is read by the software which then uses the list addresses to distribute copies of the message to all names on the list.
The discussion board is in the form of thread-based archives, which means that groups of messages that form a single discussion appear together.
LISTSERV Help for Subscribers
This document answers a few basic questions about the CRAM LISTSERVs for list subscribers. What is LISTSERV?
LISTSERV is software designed to facilitate e-mail communication among a group of people who share a common interest. Such groups (known as "mailing lists," "discussion lists," or simply "lists") can be virtually any size and can include members from out around the world. There are thousands of LISTSERV lists worldwide. Some are public and open to anyone to join. Others, like CRAM-commissioners are private. Each list has its own unique e-mail address.
